Suspect Charged One Year After Fatal Hit And Run Accident

STATESVILLE, NC — Police have charged a 26-year-old man in connection to a deadly hit and run accident that happened in July of 2016.

Kerry Ravenell, Jr. has been charged with felony Death by Vehicle, DWI, Driving while License Revoked, and felony Hit and Run with Serious Injury/Death.

Around 5:45am on Monday, July 4, 2016, 43-year-old Reynaldo Hernandez was killed in an accident at the corner of Garner Bagnal Boulevard and Buffalo Shoals Road. Officials say Hernandez was found in his car at the scene and pronounced dead a short time later.

According to reports, a second vehicle hit Hernadez while speeding through the intersection. The driver then took off on foot before police arrived. Investigators determined that the second car was a rental from Enterprise Rental Car.

Police say recently received lab examinations, along with other evidence, led to the charges against Ravenell.

Ravenell is currently serving a prison sentence in North Carolina on unrelated charges.
