NC Dept. of Ag Launches Investigation into Anson Co. Animal Shelter

ANSON CO., N.C. – Two developments in the case of the Anson County puppy. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture confirmed it has launched an investigation to determine whether the shelter violated the state Animal Welfare Act in its handling of Shayla. And, North Carolina House Representative John Bradford, a Republican who represents Mecklenburg County, says he and Representative Mark Brody (R), from Anson County, will work together to introduce a bill that would ensure shelters wait ten days before euthanizing an animal in a rabies quarantine.

Bradford wrote to WCCB News @ Ten anchor Morgan Fogarty, in part, “Just wanted you to know I’m upset about what happened and will lead the effort to try and fix this in state statute so other innocent animals don’t have to die just because a shelter is impatient and short sighted to wait the entire 10 days.”

The shelter euthanized the four-month-old dog Tuesday. Critics say she was mishandled, mis-identified, and put down in an abuse of power. The dog’s rabies test came back negative.
