Red Cross Shelter at Albemarle Road Middle School Set to Close

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After staffing and operating a shelter for residents displaced by the fire at Woodscape Apartments in east Charlotte, a plan is now in place to close the Red Cross shelter located at Albemarle Road Middle School.

β€œThe willingness to work together to best serve our neighbors who found themselves without a home has been inspirational,” said Angela A. Broome Powley, regional executive officer, American Red Cross Western North Carolina Region. β€œThe Red Cross, which has been serving this community for 100 years, has never done it alone. It is through the generosity of our donors and the collaboration of our partners that allowed us to be able to serve our neighbors as we have.”

Partner collaboration and assistance from Red Cross caseworkers have resulted in most of the displaced residents relocating or negotiating for places to live, either at Woodscape Apartments or elsewhere. Based on additional information gathered from residents and the availability of apartments, it has been determined that those remaining should be able to move into an apartment in the next few days. Therefore, the residents have been advised that the Red Cross shelter will close after breakfastΒ MondayΒ morning. Red Cross volunteers will continue to provide meals and casework assistance through the weekend.

β€œWe also want to thank Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for providing the facility,” said Broome Powley. β€œTogether, our community can accomplish so much.”
