NEW YORK (AP) β The New York Philharmonic says music director Alan Gilbert will step down in late 2017.
The Philharmonic says in a statement issued Friday that Gilbert “will continue to have a significant presence” in its 2017-18 season and beyond.
Gilbert says making music with the Philharmonic brings him “great joy.” But he adds it’s an “all-consuming job.” He says the time will be right after eight years to hand off responsibility.
He has expressed a desire to ensure a strong transition as the planned renovation of Avery Fisher Hall approaches. It’s expected to start in 2019.
Orchestra committee chair Fiona Simon says Gilbert has had a “huge impact” on the way musicians “think about what’s possible.”
Gilbert began his tenure as music director in September 2009, becoming the first native New Yorker to hold the post.
