Severe Weather Preparedness Week: Ways to receive warnings

Have at least two ways to receive alerts when severe weather strikes.

Day 3 of Severe Weather Preparedness focuses on ways to receive severe weather alerts and where to go when severe weather strikes.

Are you prepared for severe weather? Do you know where to go? Does your family have a plan? Do you have at least two ways to receive warnings? These are all questions you should have answers to in the event severe weather strikes.

It is important to always have at least two ways to receive warnings:

  • The easiest and least expensive way is downloading the free WCCB Charlotte weather app.
  • NOAA weather radio. You can get this at Walmart for about $30. Programming your weather radio is simple and there are easy-to-follow instructions in the box and online.
  • Another way to receive warnings is to be sure emergency alerts are ‘on’ on your smartphone. Go to Settings -> Notifications then scroll down and be sure all 3 of the alerts are switched to on. AMBER Alerts, Emergency Alerts, and Public Safety Alerts.

The second thing you need to do is know where to go. You want to be in the lowest level of your home, most interior room and away from windows. If you’re in an apartment, make friends with the people below you today. Protecting your head is important so as you rush into your safe place be sure to grab a helmet, pillow, and/or a mattress.Tornado SafetyIf you live in a mobile home… get out before the storm hits. You will want to go to a sturdy shelter. That may be a family or friends house… or a nearby grocery store.
