‘God’s Pit Crew’ delivers homes
Several North Carolina families finally have a home tonight after Hurricane Helene destroyed their belongings.
God’s Pit Crew, a nonprofit from out of state, delivered the homes.
There wasn’t much left of Big Bear Branch Road after Helene.
“Our neighbor’s houses were washed away. Ours, thankfully, got saved by this landslide,” Martha Thomas, who received a home, said.
That landslide didn’t really help Thomas’ home.
“The landslide caused it to kind of tilt backwards, so water was able to get inside,” Thomas said.
But Thomas wasn’t in that home by herself
“I have four kids,” Thomas said.
They’ve been on the move for nearly seven months.
“I’ve stayed with my sister. That’s where I stayed at the beginning,” Thomas said. “We moved out into my ex-husband’s house. Then, we went to my mom’s.
They thought they’d found the solution.
“Then we finally got this camper so we were able to move out but then the power went out on this one so we had to move to a different camper,” Thomas said. “It definitely has been hard.”
The solution eventually came after her neighbors reached out to God’s Pit Crew.
“You just have to fill out an application and right there and then after we filled it out, they were like, ‘congratulations, you’re getting a brand new home,’” Thomas said. “Got in my car and I started crying because I was like, ‘oh my gosh.’”
The nonprofit brought the homes for Thomas and her neighbors, who also lost what they had on Thursday.
While it may not be their forever home, she’s ready to move in again with a new perspective.
“Home is where me and my kids are,” Thomas said. “I feel like now it has a bigger meaning to it.”
