HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. — A stretch of I-40 that was heavily damaged by Hurricane Helene is closed to due weather once again. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has closed the interstate in both directions after heavy rain led to flooding and mudslides over the roadway.
Mutliple vehicles were overtaken by the rising waters at exit 451, but no injuries have been reported from NCDOT. At least one mudslide was also reported in the area.
This stretch of road was heavily damaged in September of 2024 after Helene rolled through the Southeast. I-40 was re-opened with one lane in either direction in March after early estimates suggested the interstate wouldn’t support through-traffic until 2027.
I-40 remains closed at the 451 mile-marker as of Wednesday evening. WCCB Charlotte will update this article as more information comes in.
