BOONE, NC– Boone Police are searching for a man who has been posing as an Uber driver and assaulting passengers.
On September 24th, Boone Police received a report of a sex assault involving an βUberβ driver. The reporting victim and her friends reportedly ordered an βUberβ and were picked up in the early morning hours. The βUberβ driver was reported to be of middle-eastern descent (mid-thirties) and driving a Toyota Camry.
On October 6th, at approximately 3AM, an Uber driver received a call for a pickup in Boone.Β As the Uber driver was waiting for his passenger, he observed a gray Toyota Camry pull up and try to pick up his passenger. The person who ordered the Uber got out of the Camry andΒ told the real Uber driver that the person was acting suspicious, and falsely identified himself as their Uber driver. The passenger did not recognize the driver from the picture provided in the Uber app and got out of the vehicle.
On November 1st, at approximately 2AM, the Uber driver from the October 6th incident observed the same vehicle, a gray Toyota Camry with Florida registration, traveling up and down W. King St., and stop in front of populated bars without picking up fares.
Boone Police say the man involved with the assaults has been identified and is cooperating with authorities.
