LANCASTER, S.C. — A Lancaster man is in custody following a standoff with authorities on Thursday.
According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at about 3 p.m. a deputy attempted to stop Michael Wayne Terry II for a traffic violation.
Terry pulled into his driveway and exited the vehicle as the officer approached. The deputy says Terry began arguing with him about the stop and put his hands in his pockets while walking away.
The officer attempted to detain Terry, who immediately ran.
A foot pursuit ensued around several nearby homes and ended when Terry ran back into his mobile home.
Terry exited his home and retrieved a hunting rifle from his vehicle, while the deputy was interacting with an unidentified female who approached the scene.
More officers including SWAT, crisis negotiators, investigators and command staff arrived on the scene and unsuccessfully attempted to get Terry to come out of the home using a patrol car PA system.
Authorities could periodically see Terry in the home and eventually the SWAT team made entry but could not locate Terry.
Officers discovered a trap door in the floor for access under the mobile home and found Terry in the opening.
The situation ended at about 9 p.m. Thursday night.
Terry was taken to the hospital before being taken to jail. He was charged with Resisting Arrest, Pointing and Presenting a firearm, and given a ticket for improper tag.
Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said, “Although this incident stretched on for several
hours, we are happy it ended peacefully and without injury to Mr. Terry, any citizen, or
any of our officers. The streets in this neighborhood are narrow and the homes are close
to each other. We appreciate the cooperation of nearby residents and are sorry for their
inconvenience.”
