Tuesday washout, cooler air sticks around

Opportunities for showers linger through the remainder of the workweek, but we'll need to watch for heavy rain mainly on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Queen City barely managed to scrape by 80° Monday afternoon, but don’t expect any typical summer warmth this week as clouds, showers, and northeasterly winds continue their dominance over the Carolinas. We’ll need to watch out for widespread heavy rain across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area this Tuesday afternoon as highs struggle to clear the 60s around the Metro. Rain totals may approach 2-3″ over the next 48 hours – with localized spots possibly seeing even more – thanks to a hearty plume of moisture cascading into the Carolinas from the Gulf. The cool and soggy pattern lingers throughout the remainder of the workweek ahead, although Piedmont temperatures steadily rise near 80° by Friday. A classic summertime pattern returns this weekend, with more heat and humidity as isolated storms fire up in the afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to monitor Tropical Storm Dexter in the open Atlantic as it swirls away from the mainland U.S. While we won’t see any direct impacts from Dexter in the Carolinas, the rip current risk remains elevated along the coast over the next few days. The NHC is also watching an area off the South Carolina coast for potential tropical development over the next 5-7 days, giving this region a 30% chance of spawning a named storm within this timeframe. Regardless of development, we’ll need to watch this area closely as it could bring another round of heavy rain to the Carolinas this weekend into early next week.
