East Charlotte couple’s home hit by gunfire
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An East Charlotte couple is asking the city for help after their home was hit with bullets. They live in Country Club Heights, and they say many of the problems stem from a nearby apartment complex.
Bryson Rogers and Monica Glick have lived in their home on Bentley Place for three years. They are located steps away from the Country Club Apartments.
“You have a homeless individual that’s living on their property right behind our house. There’s human waste, there’s drug activity,” Bryson Rogers said.
Monday night, bullets flew through the fence and into their home. There are still shell casings near the scene.
“The CMPD detective is pretty confident that it wasn’t anything directed to us, which I agree with, it just happens to be an innocent bystander,” Rogers said. “However, even with that innocent bystander, the stray bullet is still very dangerous.”
WCCB used the CMPD crime mapping tool to get an idea of how many crimes are happening in the area. We found at least 40 incidents of both property and violent crimes within a quarter mile of the apartments since April.
“The police show up. They’re doing what they can,” Monica Glick said. “Ultimately, again it’s the same thing- the property management, the owners of the property. They’re not held accountable.”
Concordia Properties owns Country Club Apartments. The New Jersey based company did not answer inquires from WCCB Tuesday. Rogers and Glick say they have both reached out to the company but they have not been helpful with a solution.
“Do the right thing and get additional security and talk to the neighbors and also enhance the property,” Glick said.
The City of Charlotte tells WCCB it has received several 311 complaint calls for trash, debris and unhoused people. Some complaints have been referred to code enforcement.
A Google review from last month echoes Rogers concerns about shootings and homeless people.
Concordia properties replied to the review – writing that a new office team is working to address issues.
Rogers wants the city to pressure the Concordia to fix the ongoing problems.
“Out of sight, out of mind until something bad happens, like a shooting goes off and then my house gets hit two feet away from where my wife and I hang out,” Rogers said.
The police report for Monday’s shooting says a car was also hit by bullets. There have been no arrests at this time.
