UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Robert Dean Wilson, age 48, is in custody following a dangerous pursuit with Union County Sheriff’s Deputies yesterday afternoon that began in western Union County and ended south of Indian Trail.
At approximately 4:53 pm, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police alerted deputies about a stolen Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck traveling east on Rea Road, entering Union County.
The stolen vehicle, occupied by Wilson and a female passenger, traveled to Newtown Road where deputies attempted a traffic stop. Wilson refused to stop and a pursuit began. Several times during the pursuit, Wilson crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, endangering motorists as well as officers involved in the chase. Wilson also failed to stop at stop signs as well as a red light and left the roadway on more than one occasion, driving through fields in an attempt to get away.
Wilson continued to flee and eventually came to the roundabout at Wesley Chapel and Goldmine Road. After clearing the roundabout, deputies used their vehicles to block Wilson’s path, and he pulled into a driveway, where Wilson and the female passenger were taken into custody.
Deputies learned that Wilson had a walking boot on his foot from a recent ankle break and he was arrested but transported to CHS-Union for treatment concerning this injury. He remains in custody at CHS-Union pending further evaluation by medical personnel. The female passenger was released and is not facing charges pertaining to the vehicle chase.
Investigators determined the vehicle was stolen from Marshville. The vehicle theft remains under investigation by Marshville Police.
Wilson, whose last known address was in the 5200 block of Old Monroe Road, Indian Trail, NC, faces the following charges resulting from the chase:
- Resist, Delay and Obstruct
- Felony Fleeing to Elude
- Driving while License Revoked
- Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle
- Felonious Restraint
- Possession of Methamphetamines
This investigation is active and additional charges are likely.
Sheriff Eddie Cathey praised the efforts of all deputies, law enforcement as well as the dispatchers involved in this pursuit. He commented, “Our deputies acted quickly once they received the information from CMPD. They realized they had to get this vehicle stopped due to the careless and dangerous actions of the driver. The dispatchers and officers did a great job communicating with one another so deputies could be in the right place to safely end this pursuit. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.”
