CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The start of a new month also means new laws in effect for North Carolina.
House Bill 307, also referred to as Iryna’s Law, was signed by Governor Josh Stein back in October.
It’s named after Iryna Zarutska, who was stabbed and killed on the light rail in August. The bill was created to keep people with lengthy violent criminal backgrounds off the street.
Also in effect today, armed teachers, staff and volunteers can begin carrying loaded concealed handguns and stun guns in private schools.
There are guidelines that must be in place before they can be carried including: written permission from the school’s Board of Trustees or Administrative Director, a handgun permit, and a completed training course. The bill became law in July after Republican lawmakers overrode the Governor’s veto.
SNAP recipients will also see changes. They will need to work, volunteer or participate in job training for at least 80 hours a month to maintain their benefits.
President Donald Trump signed a law this summer that will expand those requirements to include people ages 55 to 65, and parents without children under 14.
