Officer And Suspect Identified In Deadly West Charlotte Officer Involved Shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened at an apartment complex in west Charlotte Friday afternoon.

CMPD says 27-year-old Michael Shoupe has died after being shot by Officer Daniel Flynn on Timberbrook Drive. Around 1:05pm, officials say someone reported Shoupe as being suicidal and causing harm to himself. Due to the nature of the call, Charlotte Fire and Medic arrived on scene to provide possible medical care.

Crews say they found Shoupe wondering around with a knife, being uncooperative, and advised CMPD to speed up their response. Officials also say that Shoupe told fire and medic crews he wanted police to shoot him.

Officer Flynn was the first to arrive on scene, according to CMPD. Upon his arrival, reports say Shoupe raised his knife and started charging at Flynn.

CMPD says Flynn tried to distance himself from Shoupe and gave repeated loud commands for him to drop the weapon. When Shoupe refused to comply, officials say Flynn fired his weapon.

Shoupe was transported to the hospital by Medic, but but later died from his injuries. No officers were injured in the shooting.

CMPD says Officer Flynn has been placed on paid Administrative Leave and Internal Affairs will be conducting a parallel investigation into the shooting, which is standard protocol. Flynn has been with CMPD since May 2006.
