CHARLOTTE, NC —Β For the first time in four years, theΒ Charlotte area is in a stage one drought. Β Officials are recommending several ways residents can voluntarily conserve water.

Some people have asked why fountains at city and county parks are still running. Β WCCB Charlotte found out the water in the fountain at Romare Bearden Park is recycled.

The drought stages are based on a formula that includes how much water is in our lakes, how much is coming to the lakes and the U.S. Drought Monitor.

“The most important thing to do is conserve now so we do not escalate, because the next stage would be mandatory water restrictions. And so if we get folks to voluntarily limit their water use, hopefully we can stay in that stage one and not have to move to mandatory,” said Louise Bhavnani of Charlotte Water.

Β

Charlotte Water is asking people to only irrigate onΒ Tuesdays andΒ Saturdays between 6am and 6pm.
