Students In Charlotte Preparing for ‘March For Our Lives’ Demonstration
CHARLOTTE, NC.– Students in Charlotte area schools are preparing to take the streets, demanding change. They’re part of the half-a-million students around the country signing up for ‘March for Our Lives’ demonstrations, to protest gun violence and demand stricter legislation.
On Saturday, First Ward Park in Uptown Charlotte is expected to be packed with thousands of people. Two CMS seniors are working around the clock for the demonstration starting at 11am.
It’s hard to believe it’s been over a month since 17 lives were taken in the Stoneman Douglas High School massacre in Parkland, Florida.
Senior at Myers Park High School Maddie Syfert says the shooting, hits close to home.
“I couldn’t get the Parkland shooting out of my head and how the students rose up and made a difference on the news, and they didn’t let it stay off the news like most shootings die off,” says Syfert.
Syfert and senior at Charlotte County Day School Carly Lerner, were strangers before connecting on social media. They both had a common goal — to make a difference. Deciding then to plan the Charlotte ‘March for Our Lives’. Honoring those killed at Stoneman Douglas High School, and join in rallying Americans across the United States to say enough to gun violence.
“I want our voices to be heard, I want people to know, like Maddie said, that we do have a voice,” says Lerner.
Lerner and Syfert used every social media site to get the word out and the response was overwhelming. They’re expecting 5,000 to 10,000 people to join.
“It has been really inspiring to see hundreds of volunteers reach out and say what can I do to help, and a lot of the students from around the city, around the state reaching out,” says Syfert.
