Duke Energy asks customers to reduce energy usage

Duke Energy is asking its customers across the Carolinas to reduce their energy usage on Monday morning to prevent potential power outages.

The company said the extremely cold temperatures are driving an unusually high demand across the East Coast. Duke Energy is asking customers to voluntarily reduce their energy use from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday to reduce energy demand and lower the risk of power outages.

“We know it’s inconvenient to reduce electric use, but it makes a real difference.” said Gerald Wilson, Duke Energy vice president of grid operations. “We are taking every step to meet our customers energy needs, including maximizing our generation and purchasing power and working with large commercial and industrial customers who have demand response programs. We appreciate our customers’ cooperation, patience and understanding as we work to maintain reliable service across the Carolinas.”

To help, Duke Energy recommends setting your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting, avoiding using major appliances like dishwashers and washing machines, and turning off any unnecessary devices. Electric vehicle owners should charge midday when demand is lower.
