Crews Still Cleaning Up After Spill Dumps Over 15 Million Gallons Of Raw Sewage Into Creek

CHARLOTTE, NC — Crews are cleaning up after a massive sewage spill in northwest Charlotte. More than 15 million gallons of raw sewage made its way into Long Creek, which flows into the Catawba River.

Charlotte Water blames a tree that feel onto a 30-inch sewer pipe near Oakdale Road on Monday. Crews have stopped the leak.

The Catawba Riverkeeper, Sam Perkins says all of the rain is helping to flush out some of the sewage. “There is a lot of concern. One of the good things is that we do have a lot of rain to dilute and help flush it out. We don’t notice a sewer smell right now. That’s a positive sign.”

Charlotte Water says the spill is not impacting the drinking water supply that comes from the river.
