Limebike Scooters Canned A Day After Debut–City Never Gave Approval
CHARLOTTE, NC.– The newest way to get around Charlotte — canned just a day after its debut. The city never approved the Lime electric scooters, so they will be gone by Friday.
The scooters have only been on the streets for 24 hours, and they’re causing problems. Not only did Lime not have permission, but there are also safety concerns for people renting the scooters.
The Charlotte Department of Transportation says it needs time to figure out safety guidelines.
“One it being motorized and all those different rules. When it’s on the road it has to follow moped like rules on the road, when it’s on the sidewalk there are others,” says Charlotte City Council member Tariq Bokhari.
North Carolina law says when operating a moped or a scooter, you have to be at least 16 and wear a helmet.
“They do go kind of fast so I was surprised there weren’t any helmets around,” says Cameron Gould.
The four bike sharing pilot programs in Charlotte right now, all have permits with the city. Because the scooters are motorized, they need their own separate permits.
“They’re in deep conversations with city staff and CDOT to go about understanding what a new pilot permit would look like for that,” says Council member Bokhari.
Lime says, it will continue working with city leaders:
“…towards a common-sense regulatory solution that prioritizes rider safety and accessibility, while maintaining our scooters as an affordable, transportation alternative for residents of Charlotte.”
