CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a 6 to 5 vote, Charlotte City Council has voted to rescind its support for an NCDOT project that would have expanded toll lanes on 77 south. The council has directed its representative for the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization to oppose the project on behalf of the council.
This comes after community pushback about the $3.2 billion dollar project that would have built the toll lanes and interchanges above and through neighborhoods and parks on Charlotte’s west side.
The goal of the project was to reduce congestion along 77 south between the South Carolina state line and Brookshire Freeway.
The project would have been funded by a public, private partnership. Now that the city of Charlotte has rescinded its support, we are working to learn what that means for the future of the project.
