NEWTON, N.C. – A former lieutenant with the Newton Police Department pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of a motorcyclist last year, according to the Catawba County Justice Center.

Carlos Alverto Uribe, 29, entered the guilty plea after police said he shot and killed 21-year-old Camden Childers following a chase on June 26, 2025.

Childers led police on a pursuit on his bike into a cul-de-sac in Conover, North Carolina. Police said Uribe used his patrol vehicle to hit the motorcycle, knocking it and Childers to the ground. Uribe then kicked Childers in the stomach and shot him after he had his hands up and surrendered, according to investigators.

Uribe’s body cam footage reportedly shows Childers saying, “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! He shot me! He shot me! He shot me! He shot me!” The footage also shows Uribe saying, “You don’t go for somebody’s gun…”

Investigators said no video evidence showed that Childers had a gun or attempted to get a gun.

Childers was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. An autopsy showed that he died from a gunshot wound to the upper chest.
