NTSB report: Bus traveled almost half a mile before stopping in deadly wreck
STAFFORD CO., VA – The National Transportation Safety Board has released the preliminary results of its investigation into a deadly crash involving a bus headed from New York City to Charlotte
That crash happened May 29th around 2:30 in the morning on I-95 in Stafford, Virginia. The report found the bus was in the southbound center lane, when it approached a work zone that had the center and right lanes closed.
It says the driver Jing Dong did not slow down as he approached stopped traffic. The bus plowed into the vehicles ahead of it and continued for almost half a mile before coming to a stop in the median.
Eight other vehicles were involved in the crash, and five people died, including two children, ages seven and 13. 44 people were taken to hospitals.
The driver, Dong, is facing five felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and a misdemeanor reckless driving charge.
