Suspect arrested after shooting, standoff at north Charlotte business

A suspect is facing charges after shooting into a vehicle and barricading himself inside a local business, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Jarod Starks, 37, was arrested and faces multiple felony charges, including attempted armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

The incident happened just before 5 p.m. Saturday when CMPD dispatched to a call reporting a shooting into an occupied vehicle in the 2300 block of North Tryon Street. Moments later, the victim flagged down an off-duty CMPD officer assigned to the light rail.

The officer responded and confronted the subject believed to be involved in the initial shooting. During the encounter, the officer perceived an imminent threat and discharged their service weapon, police said.

The suspect, later identified as Starks, fled the scene and barricaded himself inside a nearby business. All individuals inside the business were able to safely evacuate.

Multiple units, including CMPD’s Operation Command, Homicide, SWAT, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Charlotte Fire, and Medic, responded to the scene. After a brief standoff, Starks surrendered to officers without further incident.

No community members were injured during the incident. Both Starks and the involved officer were transported to a local hospital for precautionary reasons. After his release from the hospital, Starks was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Starks has been charged with the following:

  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill (x3)
  • Felony Assault with a Firearm on a Government Official
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
  • Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle
  • Attempted Armed Robbery
  • Going Armed to the Terror of the Public

CMPD is conducting a separate but parallel investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome.
