UPDATE: Pedestrian Fatally Struck In Hit-And-Run In Southeast Charlotte Was First Confronted By CMPD Officers

The Latest:

CMPD released a statement providing more details on the death of a pedestrian in southeast Charlotte.  Investigators say the woman who was hit and killed, Jasmine Hillman, was with her boyfriend at the Starz Mart on Monroe Road when they were confronted by police.

CMPD says officers made contact with the couple because they were on the property while the business was closed.  Officers reportedly informed Hillman and the man that they needed to leave the property.

Police say the man began to leave but Hillman became argumentative with officers and began stepping into and out of the street.  Hillman eventually crossed Monroe Road but was struck by a vehicle driven by Nicholas Grant, according to a news release.  Investigators say Hillman was not in a crosswalk at the time of the incident.

Nicholas Grant

Grant is accused of fleeing the scene.  Police say he was caught a short time later and was impaired and in possession of marijuana.  Grant has been charged with felony hit and run, involuntary manslaughter, DWI and possession of marijuana.

The Internal Affairs Bureau is reviewing the Body Worn Camera video on the officers and will conduct a separate internal investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident.
