YMCA CEO pens open letter about sale of Morrison Y, says drop in membership and revenue after pandemic prompted decision

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The YMCA of Greater Charlotte says a drop in membership and revenue after the pandemic led to the controversial decision to sell the Morrison YMCA in Ballantyne.

YMCA President and CEO Sue Glass writing that in an open letter to the community posted on YMCA’s website on Tuesday.

She goes on to say the $42 million offer from Moments of Hope Church was unsolicited, and that the YMCA’s Board of Directors “wrestled” with the decision to sell, but ultimately decided it needed the financial stability a sale would provide.

Despite several recent protests at the Morrison Y, the letter says the Board has a “binding contract” with Moments of Hope Church that the YMCA must honor.
