“CMS Transportation is working hard to reduce delays for day two of back to school week and to get students to school and back home safely. Families should see improvements every day and the district appreciates the patience of families and students as we keep focus on safety first. We look forward to continuing improvements throughout the first week. Our goal is to allow students, families, teachers and students to focus on what matters most – teaching and learning. CHARLOTTE, N.C. –Β School is back in session for thousands of families across the WCCB Charlotte area.

For parents and teachers – safety is a top concern.

Police arrested a man accused of assaulting a little girl and her mother near a school in North Charlotte.

School officials say there were also normal first day challenges, including staff shortages and late buses.

Superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox says,Β for the most part, day one went smoothly.

A frightening experience though for a mom and her six-year-old daughter as they walked to Highland Renaissance Academy in North Charlotte.

Police arrested 46-year-old Ronnie Carr. They say he came up and tried the grab the girl on Hilo Drive around 7:30 a.m.

He’s also accused of assaulting her mother and exposing himself to both of them.

β€œWe do know that around that campus there is kind of a small population of folks who are camping in the woods behind the school. There’s no fencing, so we are looking at securing the campus a little bit differently in the days ahead,” Wilcox said.

Also on the security front – Wilcox says it was slow for parents who had to go through a new computer screening process.

β€œWe didn’t have enough units there and we created some angst among some parents who wanted to walk their children into the classroom or into schools,” Wilcox said.

First day school bus delays also created frustrations. Some buses were more than an hour late. But district leaders say it should straighten itself out in the coming days.

It’s also the first day back for Isaac Murray, a school counselor at Tuckaseegee Elementary.

β€œWe have a lot of trauma in the communities and a lot of things going on in the world and our kids are affected by that,” Murray says.

This year the district added 30 new guidance counselors, 20 social workers, and 10 psychologists.
