COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides is retiring after more than 10 years leading the university system.
Pastides announced his decision to step aside next summer during his State of the University speech Wednesday and in a message on Twitter and Facebook.
Pastides says the university is in a good place to find a new leader. His wife, Patricia Moore-Pastides, says they both want to spend more time with their two granddaughters.
Pastides became president in 2008 after serving as dean at the Arnold School of Public Health.
The university’s main campus in Columbia has added about 7,000 students for an enrolment of 34,000 since Pastides took over. The university system, including its six regional campuses, has added 10,000 students for a total enrollment of about 51,000.
