Melting Snow Could Freeze Overnight

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–Eight miles. In the snow. That’s how far Hunter Oxford had to walk on Thursday.
His parents wouldn’t let him drive to see his friends on roads covered with snow and ice. “It’s overall, just not a fun trip,” said the Southwest Charlotte resident.

City officials say the snow is piling up in Uptown and Southwest Charlotte, and it will take several days for snow plows to clean it all up. “This is large snow and some of the places where snow is piling up is dense. It will take a little bit longer for it to melt,” said CDOT Director Danny Pleasant.

In order to make it easier for the snow plows, CMPD says it will begin removing abandoned vehicles on the side of the road beginning at 7 a.m. Friday. “It’s just not right that we’re being unfairly treated,” said Oxford as he headed hom alongside the roads the city hasn’t finishing plowing yet. At least some day he can tell his grandkids exactly how far he had to walk in the snow: “Yes sir… 8 miles of fun!” said Oxford.

If you see a trouble spot, city officials want you to report it to 311. NCDOT is sending 15 employees and 11 trucks from Eastern North Carolina to Mecklenburg County right now to help out.
