Officer Uninjured After Being Shot At With High Powered Rifle In Albemarle

ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Police say someone shot at an Albemarle police officer with a high-powered rifle Sunday afternoon, after the officer initiated a vehicle stop on a car suspected to be involved in another shooting earlier Sunday.

Albemarle police officers initially responded to reports of a shooting on T.E. White Dr. near Elizabeth Avenue around noon on Sunday.

Arriving officers located a gold, 2002 Chevy truck that had crashed but the driver was not on the scene.Β  Β The vehicle had a bullet hole in the door on the passenger’s side.

A person approached officers claiming to be the owner of the truck but would not give police information about the shooting.Β  Witnesses told authorities that someone driving a black Lexus shot at the truck.

Officers in the area received that information and Officer Blake Evans observed the suspect vehicle on NC 24 near Taco Bell.

When officer Evans tried to stop the vehicle a passenger in the black Lexus stood up through the sunroof and shot at officer Evans with a high-powered rifle, striking his vehicle three times.

One of the shots damaged the radiator and rendered officer Evans’ vehicle inoperable.Β  The other shots struck the driver’s side windshield and once on the driver’s side of the hood.

A stray bullet struck another vehicle’s windshield and ricocheted before hitting the driver and causing non-life threatening injuries.Β  The driver was treated by paramedics at the scene and released.

The suspect who shot at officer Evans was described as a black male with dreadlocks.
