City Of Charlotte Prepares For Winter Weather

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte officials say the city is preparing for a significant winter storm during a news conference Monday morning. Β Residents are strongly encouraged to stay off the roads as much as possible during the inclement weather period.
Duke Energy says they are expecting power outages due to ice forming on power lines and trees. Β Out of state crews are on standby and will move to our area if outages become an issue. Β
The Charlotte Department of Transportation says they are finished treating roads and sidewalks. Β Once the winter weather hits the Charlotte area they will send out 32 trucks that will be loaded with salt and calcium chloride. Β CDOT says road temperatures are expected to be in the 31 to 32 degree range so icing is expected. Β
Charlotte Area Transit officials say CATS and LYNX will run as long as conditions allow. Β They encourage users to check their website and social media pages for updates as the winter weather hits the area. Β CATS will begin express bus routes at 3:30pm as employers release workers early. Β LYNX rush hour service will begin at 2pm. Β
Due to the weather, no yard service pick up will take place this week. Β At this time, the solid waste division has not canceled trash collection pick up for Tuesday. Β If you have any questions about trash or recycling collection please call 311. Β
CMPD plans to have extra officers staffed throughout the evening. Β They ask that you only use 911 for true emergencies. Β All other calls should go to 311. Β
The Charlotte Fire Department has also brought in additional staff to assist in response to wrecks and downed power lines.
Charlotte-Douglas International Airport has already started pre-treating pavement and roads. Β Airlines will de-ice planes on an as needed basis. Β CLT asks passengers to contact their airlines by phone or look at their website for updates on flight delays or cancellations. Β
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management and Mecklenburg County Community Support Services are partnering to open a Warming Station to make sure everyone seek shelter from the cold. The Center will open Monday at 12:00 p.m. and will remain open until 6:00 p.m. this evening. The Warming Station will be located at the Mecklenburg County Homeless Resource Center, 618 North College Street, at the Hal Marshall annex beginning at 6:00 p.m.
**Note: All court sessions at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse are still on schedule for Monday. Β
Those needing to seek shelter through the night will be provided transportation to one of the accommodations listed below.
