PANTHERS-HILL

Panthers WR Hill carted off the field with right leg injury

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Panthers wide receiver Stephen Hill has been carted off the field with a right leg injury.

Hill attempted to make a catch across the middle during practice Saturday, but came down wrong on his leg and fell to the ground in obvious pain. Trainers taped Hill’s knee before helping him on to a cart.

There was no immediate word on the extent of the injury.

The former New York Jets’ second-round pick was battling for a roster spot in Carolina. He spent last season on the Panthers’ practice squad.

It’s been a rough week for Hill.

He was cited Tuesday by police in Concord, North Carolina for knowingly possessing drug paraphernalia with intent to use. Coach Ron Rivera said the arrest wouldn’t affect Hill’s chances of making the team.

NASCAR-IOWA

Ryan Blaney wins NASCAR Xfinity race in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ryan Blaney survived a flurry of late cautions to win the NASCAR Xfinity race Saturday night at Iowa Speedway for his first victory of the season.

Blaney erased the sting of a disappointing runner-up finish last week in Indianapolis by maintaining his lead through a second green-white-checkered finish on the 0.894-mile oval.

Blaney won after finishing second three times in his other six Xfinity starts this season.

Regan Smith was second, followed by Brian Scott, Ty Dillon and Brendan Gaughan

Fifty-one-year-old Kenny Wallace, the career Xfinity starts leader with 547, finished 15th in the last race of his NASCAR career.

Kyle Busch wins again, taking checkered flag at Pocono

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Kyle Busch’s return to the Truck Series was a triumphant one, pulling away on the final laps Saturday to win at Pocono Raceway.

Busch’s season debut mirrored his recent finishes in the Sprint Cup series, where he’s won three straight races and four of five. He’s on the pole for Sunday’s race.

Busch, the second-winningest driver in series history, earned career victory No. 43. He won eight times in 2010 and seven times each in 2009 and 2014.

Busch had just enough fuel in an overtime finish to hold off fellow Cup driver Kevin Harvick. Tyler Reddick was third, followed by Tyler Reddick, Cameron Hayley and Austin Dillon.

Reddick took the series points lead from Matt Crafton. Crafton connected with Brad Keselowski and both drivers were knocked out of the race. Crafton returned and finished 28th.

Busch led 53 of 69 laps in the No. 51 Toyota.

ARCA-POCONO

Cole Custer races to 1st ARCA victory at Pocono Raceway

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Cole Custer raced to his first career ARCA Series victory Saturday at Pocono Raceway.

The 17-year-old Custer became the ninth first-time winner in the series this season. He drives for JR Motorsports.

Grant Enfinger was second, followed by Matt Kurzejewski, Austin Theriault and Josh Williams.

Enfinger maintained his commanding lead on the series points lead. Custer has one win this season in the NASCAR Truck Series.

Nick Igdalsky, vice president and COO of Pocono Raceway, was 11th on home track.

Pole-sitter Frank Kimmel was 15th and got into a post-race shouting match with Bobby Gerhart. Kimmel’s pole was the 43rd of his career, tying him with Iggy Katona for the ARCA career record.
