UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies say they arrested a teenager that led them on a high speed chase after robbing a convenience store in Union County.
The incident happened early Monday morning after 18-year-old Quintell Weldon reportedly robbed a Circle K on Chestnut Lane in Indian Trail, according to a news release.
Deputies say Weldon entered the convenience store, went behind the counter, pointed a gun at the clerk’s head and demanded money. Weldon allegedly got away with the clerk’s wallet, phone, cash from the register and other items before leaving the scene in a vehicle traveling north on Potter Road toward Stallings.
Authorities say a Stallings Police officer observed Weldon’s vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and initiated a traffic stop on E. John Street near I-485. Officers approached the vehicle and noticed a handgun on the floorboard, according to a news release.
A short time later, Weldon is accused of driving away from the traffic stop. Authorities pursued his vehicle on I-485 and say they reached speeds in excess of 100mph.
Weldon eventually crashed into an embankment on Highway 74 and then jumped out of the vehicle and ran, according to a news release. Deputies used a K-9 officer to track Weldon down. Deputies say he was found hiding in a truck parked at a home on Stevens Mill Road.
Deputies say they found items stolen from the store clerk in Weldon’s possession and a gun and clothing used during the robbery in his crashed vehicle.
Weldon has been charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of marijuana, reckless driving to endanger and speeding to elude arrest.
