CHARLOTTE, NC — A group of citizens fighting a plan to toll parts of I-77 are rallying support against the pay-to-drive scheme.

Thursday, Widen I-77 held the second of two public meetings this week to update the community on the toll lane issue. Β The group has filed an injunction to stop the proposal to add hot lanes to the interstate.

“I can’t understand why we’re spending the money to put in tolls with a company that’s bankrupt in two other locations, in a market that doesn’t seem to be able to support them, at a cost that the average person can’t afford,” said Cornelius resident John Eberle.

The NC DOT has said tolls could be as high as $21 a day for commuters who drive the 27 miles of proposed toll lanes at rush hour.
