CHARLOTTE, NC — Some stranded passengers spent the night at Charlotte-Douglas Airport Friday night. A fire at a Chicago control tower canceled eight flights from the Queen City to the Windy City, and left hundreds stranded. Many are dealing with tough times of their own, trying to get home.
“It’s hard. My husband just had surgery done, and he’s without his medicine,” said Chicago area resident Dawn Bates. “There’s not much you can do about it, but it’s not real handy,” added her husband, John.
More than 700 American Airlines flights were canceled nationwide. There’s no word when full service will be restored at the airports in Chicago. Police believe a contract employee who recently learned he was being transferred set the fire, then tried to take his own life.
