CMPD Receives Civic Imagination Award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department received the 2019 L. Anthony Sutin Civic Imagination Award Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The award recognizes the CMPD for its collaborative partnerships within the community, specifically focused on the Promise Youth Development program.

“We are honored to be recognized for our continued dedication to community policing and the collaborative efforts that make a difference to the people we serve,” said CMPD Chief Kerr Putney.

This award honors the CMPD and a community member whose innovative civic interactions have transformed public safety in our community.

The award will be presented to Chief of Police, Kerr Putney, Major Nelson Bowling, and Mrs. Tesha Boyd, Founder and Executive Director of Promise Youth Development, for their combined efforts to equip, educate, nurture and empower young people to become productive citizens.

Promise Youth Development, in partnership with CMPD’s Independence Division Officers commit time to mentoring, tutoring, playing sports, or just being a big brother or sister to young people who live in underserved, low income neighborhoods.

The bonds that have been developed during this engagement that began three years ago has fostered positive lifelong relationships among young people and officers.
