TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker says he plans to pursue an overhaul of New Jersey’s emergency medical response system following a critical federal safety review of a highway crash that badly injured comedian Tracy Morgan and killed one of his friends.

State Sen. Joe Vitale said Wednesday he plans to push reform legislation similar to measures Republican Gov. Chris Christie vetoed in 2011 and 2013.

The National Transportation Safety Board this week found the emergency response in the 2014 New Jersey Turnpike crash included missteps and lacked oversight. The panel recommends minimum training standards for all responders be implemented.

Vitale’s previous measures would have required the state Department of Health to oversee emergency responders.

A Department of Health spokeswoman says the state already has some minimum standards in place.
