Giants take Game 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) β€” The St. Louis Cardinals shelled Madison Bumgarner the first time they faced him in the National League playoffs before last night, torching him for six runs in three 2/3 innings during the 2012 division series. Bumgarner turned the tables on the Redbirds Saturday while leading the Giants to victory in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.

Bumgarner struck out seven while allowing four hits over 7 2/3 innings of a 3-0 shutout at St. Louis. He was breezing until the seventh, when the Cardinals collected consecutive one-out singles before Kolten Wong tapped out and pinch-hitter Tony Cruz fanned.

Bumgarner also set a major league postseason record with 26 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings on the road.

Travis Ishikawa (ihsh-ih-KAH’-wah) put the Giants ahead with an RBI single in the second before Hunter Pence scored on Matt Carpenter’s error at third base later in the inning. Brandon Belt added a sacrifice fly one inning later. That was more than enough offense for the Giants to win for the 12th time in their last 13 playoff games.

Loser Adam Wainwright allowed two earned runs and six hits in just 4 2/3 innnings.

Game 2 is Sunday in St. Louis, where Lance Lynn will get the starting nod for the Cards against Jake Peavy.

Royals go 2-up

BALTIMORE (AP) β€” The Kansas City Royals still haven’t lost a playoff game since Game 4 of the 1985 World Series. They will head home with a two-games-to-none lead in the American League Championship Series after winning in their final at-bat for the second straight night, and fifth time in the postseason.

Alcides (al-SEE’-dehs) Escobar sparked a two-run ninth as the Royals downed the Orioles 6-4 in Baltimore. Escobar supplied a tiebreaking, RBI double before scoring on Lorenzo Cain’s single.

Cain went 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Royals, who are 6-0 in the playoffs and own a nine-game postseason win streak since the 1985 World Series. Eric Hosmer (HAHZ’-mur) chipped in a two-run single and George Moustakas (moos-TAH’-kahs) homered to help Kansas City improve to 4-0 on the road this month. Moustakas also laid down a bunt in the ninth to set up the go-ahead run.

The Orioles erased deficits of 3-1 and 4-3 before falling. Adam Jones hit a two-run homer for the Birds.

Baltimore hadn’t lost two straight at home since June 28 and 29 against Tampa Bay.

Game 3 is Monday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Mississippi State tops Auburn…Winston paces ‘Noles win

UNDATED (AP) β€” Mississippi State is going to move up at least one more spot in The Associated Press college football pool after picking up its ninth straight win since last season.

Dak Prescott ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as the third-ranked Bulldogs whipped No. 2 Auburn 38-20. Prescott completed 18 of 34 passes for 246 yards and also rushed for 121 yards.

Mississippi State saw an early 21-0 lead shrink to 28-23 in the third quarter before Josh Robinson ran for his second touchdown of the game midway through the final period. Robinson had 97 rushing yards for the 6-0 Bulldogs.

Auburn’s Nick Marshall threw for 209 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while also running for 100 yards.

The Georgia Bulldogs showed they are a lot more than just a Gurley show.

The 13th-ranked Bulldogs rolled to a 34-0 rout of No. 23 Missouri while running back Todd Gurley sat out due to a suspension. Freshman Nick Chubb subbed for the Bulldogs’ top offensive threat and ran for 143 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Hunter Mason went 22-of-28 passing for 156 yards and a score. He also rushed for a touchdown for the Bulldogs, who had the ball for more than 42 minutes while gaining 379 yards on 87 plays.

β€” Jameis (JAY’-mihs) Winston completed 30 of 36 passes for 317 yards and three scores to lead top-ranked Florida State over Syracuse 38-20. The Seminoles improved to 6-0 this season and ran their school-record winning streak to 22 games. Mario Penders scored twice for FSU, and tight end Nick O’Leary had a career high eight catches for 97 yards and a score.

β€” Bo Wallace ran for two scores on consecutive possessions and later threw a touchdown pass to lead third-ranked Mississippi to a 35-20 triumph over No. 14 Texas A&M. The 6-0 Rebels also scored twice on defense as Cody Prewitt returned an interception 75 yards before Mississippi returned a fumble for a TD.

β€” Fifth-ranked Baylor pulled out a 61-58 win over No. 9 TCU on Chris Callahan’s 28-yard field goal as time expired. Bryce Petty threw six touchdown passes for the 6-0 Bears, including a 25-yarder to Corey Coleman with 4:42 left in the fourth that tied it at 58. Petty had 510 passing yards and two interceptions.

β€” Everett Golson overcame his three turnovers by throwing for three touchdowns to lead sixth-ranked Notre Dame past North Carolina 50-43. Marquise Williams threw two touchdown passes, ran for another score and caught a 23-yard TD pass from receiver Quinshad Davis late in the third quarter to give the Tar Heels a 36-35 lead.

β€” Blake Sims threw two touchdown passes and No. 7 Alabama bounced back from 23-17 loss at Mississippi by escaping with a 14-13 triumph at Arkansas. The loss is the 15th straight in SEC play for the Razorbacks, who have yet to win a conference game under second-year coach Bret Bielema (BEE’-leh-muh).

β€” Connor Cook threw three touchdown passes and Nick Hill ran for three scores as eighth-ranked Michigan State outscored Purdue 45-31. Hill ran for two scores and had a late interception return for a touchdown.

-Javorius Allen ran for 205 yards and three touchdowns, and Southern California survived a last-second field goal try to knock off No. 10 Arizona 28-26 on Saturday night. The Wildcats came up short when Casey Skowron missed his third field goal of the night, a 36-yarder that sailed wide right with 17 seconds left.

β€” Eleventh-ranked Oklahoma managed just 29 total yards in the first half before using several big-play scores to top Texas 31-26 in the Red River rivalry. The 5-1 Sooners took the lead to stay thanks to a 91-yard kickoff return for a score from Alex Ross and a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown from Zach Sanchez.

β€” Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah) ran for two touchdowns and passed for 210 yards and two more scores as No. 12 Oregon outscored 18th-ranked UCLA 42-30. Royce Freeman rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns to help the 5-1 Ducks bounce back from their only loss of the season last Thursday against Arizona.

β€” Tyreek Hill returned a kickoff 99 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown before 16th-ranked Oklahoma State held off Kansas 27-20. Daxx Garman threw for 161 yards with a touchdown an interception, and Desmond Roland ran for 87 yards and another score for the 5-1 Cowboys.

β€” East Carolina trailed by 10 at halftime before Shane Carden led three long second-half touchdown drives to guide the 19th-ranked Pirates past South Florida 28-17. Carden completed 13 of 15 passes for 134 yards while engineering scoring drives of 84, 86 and 79 yards on East Carolina’s first three possessions of the second half.

β€” Anthony Boone threw for 123 yards and a touchdown and Josh Sneed rushed for 102 yards and a score to help Duke upset No. 22 Georgia Tech 31-25 to end a 10-year losing streak against the Yellow Jackets. Backup quarterback Thomas Sirk had a couple of short TD runs for the 5-1 Blue Devils, who won in Atlanta for the first time since 1994.

FSU to use independent person in Winston hearing

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) β€” Florida State will use an independent official in the student code of conduct hearing of quarterback Jameis (JAY’-mihs) Winston. A university spokeswoman says the move is to ensure a fair and impartial process as well as avoid any conflict created by the ongoing federal investigation.

No hearing date has been set. A female student has accused Winston of rape stemming from a December 2012 encounter.

Winston was not arrested or charged when police and the state attorney conducted their investigations. The university on Friday released a timeline of events defending its investigation.

Beal needs wrist surgery

WASHINGTON (AP) β€” Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal will need surgery on his left wrist after being injured in the first quarter of Friday’s preseason game against Charlotte.

Beal underwent an MRI exam that showed he has a non-displaced fracture of a bone in his non-shooting wrist. The Wizards said they will announce a timeline for Beal’s recovery after the operation.

Beal averaged 17.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season.

NASCAR-CHARLOTTE

Harvick wins as brawls ensue

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) β€” Kevin Harvick has moved into the third round of NASCAR’s championship race with a victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway. However, some of the best action occurred off the track

Harvick had to win a two-lap sprint to the finish to grab his third victory of the season, but attention turned quickly to two near-brawls in the garage involving Brad Keselowski. Denny Hamlin was held back by his own crew from going after Keselowski, and Matt Kenseth appeared to jump on Keselowski from behind between two haulers.

Keselowski, six-time and defending champion Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all go into next Sunday’s elimination race at Talladega needing a victory.

Jeff Gordon finished second, followed by Jamie McMurray, Joey Logano and Kyle Busch.

Isles complete season-opening sweep

UNDATED (AP) β€” The New York Islanders are off to an encouraging 2-0 start after completing a sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Brock Nelson and John Tavares each had a goal and an assist as the Isles topped the ‘Canes 4-3.Nelson already has six points this season, one more than Tavares.

Josh Bailey scored the eventual game-winner and Chad Johnson stopped 21 shots to help the Islanders win their final home opener at Nassau Coliseum.

The Hurricanes lost despite Jiri Tlusty’s (tuh-LOOS’-teez) hat trick.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) β€” Sang-Moon Bae is the leader through three rounds of the PGA’s Frys.com Open in Napa, Calif.

Bae fired a 7-under 65 for a 16-under total, four strokes ahead of Zachary Blair. The 65 was the best round of the day among the leaders.

Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur), Brooks Koepka, Scott Langley and Martin Laird share third at minus-11.

Triplett takes lead

CARY, N.C. (AP) β€” Kirk Triplett capped a 9-under 63 by holing out from 143 yards for an eagle on the par-5 final hole to grab the lead after the second round of the Champions Tour SAS Championship. His 11-under total gives him a two-shot lead over Paul Goydos and Tom Lehman (LAY’-man). Goydos posted a 67 and Lehman shot 68. Fred Funk is three back after a 64 and is tied with first round leader Guy Boros.

Pornanong takes 3-shot lead

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) β€” Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum made six birdies on the front nine on her way to a 6-under 65 that gives her a three-shot lead after the third round of the LPGA Malaysia tournament. Teenage star Lydia Ko is in a group four shots back, while No. 1 ranked Stacy Lewis fell nine shots off the pace.

Hamilton wins pole

SOCHI, Russia (AP) β€” Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton will start from pole position at the inaugural Russian Grand Prix. He’s looking for his fourth straight win.

Hamilton earned his seventh pole of the season by beating Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by two-tenths of a second in qualifying.
