Indians end Bosox’s streak

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Boston Red Sox were trying to become the first team to win eight straight games immediately after a double-digit losing streak, but they were stopped by one of their former prospects.

Justin Masterson allowed just three singles while striking out a season-high 10 over seven shutout innings of Cleveland’s 3-2 win over the Bosox. Masterson retired 12 of his last 13 batters after walking four in the first three frames.

Boston didn’t score until Xander Bogaerts (ZAN’-dur BOH’-gahrts) hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Bryan Shaw.

Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two-run single in the first inning of the Indians’ fourth straight win.

β€” Clayton Kershaw fanned nine and allowed two runs and just four hits in eight innings of the Dodgers’ 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox in Los Angeles. Justin Turner hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in a five-run sixth after Jose Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) smacked a two-run homer in his first game since coming off the White Sox’s disabled list.

β€” Jordy Mercer was hitting .199 before going 4-for-5 with a solo homer, two RBIs and four runs scored in Pittsburgh’s 10-3 mauling of the Padres in San Diego. Neil Walker had three hits and three RBIs to back Charlie Morton, who struck out nine while allowing two runs and just three hits in five innings.

β€” Felix Hernandez is 8-1 after allowing two runs in seven innings of Seattle’s 10-2 pounding of the New York Yankees. Kyle Seager was 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and three runs scored, while Michael Saunders added a solo shot and three RBIs.

β€” Randy Wolf picked up his first victory since 2012 by working six innings of Miami’s 3-1 win over Tampa Bay. Wolf allowed a run and three hits as the Marlins dropped the Rays to 0-7 on their eight-game road trip.

β€” Mark Reynolds belted a two-run homer and Jonathan Lucroy (LOO’-kroy) added a solo blast and two RBIs as Milwaukee whipped Minnesota 6-2. Matt Garza struck out eight and held the Twins to six hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

β€” Wilmer Flores crushed a grand slam in the ninth inning and finished with a career-high six RBIs as the New York Mets ripped the Phillies 11-2. David Wright and Curtis Granderson drove in two runs apiece for the Mets, who won four times in the five-game series at Philadelphia.

β€” Danny Duffy worked six innings of one-hit ball and Alex Gordon led off a three-run seventh with a home run as Kansas City earned a 6-0 win over the Cardinals in St. Louis. Shelby Miller had a two-hit shutout until Gordon’s blast sparked a string of four-straight hits for the Royals.

Abreu activated…Drew returns to Sox…Cano back in lineup

UNDATED (AP) β€” White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) has been reinstated from the 15-day disabled list after missing 14 games because of tendinitis in his left ankle. Abreu was leading the majors with 15 home runs and ranked second with 42 RBIs before he was sidelined.

β€” Highly touted Astros prospect Jon Singleton has agreed to a five-year contract and will make his major league debut tonight. Singleton is rated by many as baseball’s top first baseman of the future. The 22-year-old was hitting .267 with 14 homers and 43 RBIs for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

β€” Boston Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew went 0-for-2 with a walk in his season debut Monday against Cleveland. Drew re-signed with the Red Sox last month after he initially rejected a $14.1 million qualifying offer from them and became a free agent. The World Series champs also placed first baseman Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right foot.

β€” Second baseman Robinson Cano (kah-NOH’) was back in the Seattle Mariners’ lineup after missing four games with a bone bruise in his left hand. The M’s went 2-2 without Cano, who is hitting .327 with two homers and 31 RBIs in 53 games for his new ball club. Cano had not missed more than three games in a season since 2006, his second in the big leagues.

β€” Reliever Kevin Gregg is back with the Florida Marlins after agreeing to a minor league contract, pending a physical. Gregg last pitched for the Chicago Cubs last season, going 2-6 with 33 saves and a 3.48 ERA. The right-hander has 177 career saves, including 61 in two seasons with the Marlins.

β€” The New York Mets have placed center fielder Juan Lagares on the 15-day disabled list with a ribcage injury and recalled outfielder Matt den Dekker from Triple-A Las Vegas. Lagares is hitting .288 with two homers and 18 RBIs.

NBA-ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM

These guys get defensive

UNDATED (AP) β€” Chicago’s Joakim (JOH’-kihm) Noah and Indiana’s Paul George received the most votes on this year’s NBA all-defensive team, released Monday.

Less than two months after a landslide victory in balloting for the league’s defensive player of the year, Noah was the only player to receive more than 100 first-team votes and earn more than 200 points for the team. Noah received 105 of 123 possible votes, while George had 65 votes. The rest of the first team consisted of Clippers guard Chris Paul, Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka (ih-BAH’-kah) and Golden State swingman Andre Iguodala (ihg-woh-DAH’-lah).

It’s the second consecutive year Noah was chosen to the first team.

Four-time league MVP LeBron James and Indiana’s Roy Hibbert were both on the second team.

Jackson fined $25,000 for tampering

NEW YORK (AP) β€” New York Knicks President Phil Jackson has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for a tampering violation involving veteran guard Derek Fisher.

Jackson told reporters last week that Fisher is “on my list of guys that could be very good candidates” to coach the Knicks next season. Because Fisher is under contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, that was deemed to be in violation of league rules.

Sterling’s mistress says she was assaulted in Manhattan

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The woman Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was talking to when he made racist remarks says she was assaulted by two men outside a New York City hotel.

Police say V. Stiviano said there was an exchange of words and she was punched in the side of the face.

Stiviano’s audio recording of the Clippers owner led to his being banned from the NBA. Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has agreed to buy the Clippers for $2 billion.

Nadal into the quarters in Paris…Bryan brothers out in doubles

PARIS (AP) β€” Men’s top-seed Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL’) has advanced to the quarterfinals at the French Open for the fifth straight year. Nadal has a-record 32-match winning streak at the tournament following a 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 rout of Dusan Lajovic (DOH’-sahn LY’-oh-vihtch). The eight-time champion is 63-1 at Roland Garros, with the lone loss coming in the fourth round five years ago.

Nadal will face fifth seed David Ferrer (feh-REHR’) in the quarterfinals. Ferrer advanced with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win over South African Kevin Anderson. Nadal and Ferrer met in the French Open final last year, with Nadal coming out on top.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals is defending Wimbledon champ and seventh seed Andy Murray, who knocked out Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-5, 7-6.

The last American singles player is out as 15th-seed Sloane Stephens was eliminated in women’s play by fourth-seed Simona Halep (HAL’-ehp) 6-4, 6-3. Stephens made 35 unforced errors and had her service broken 6 of 9 times in the fourth-round match.

Also in the women’s bracket, sixth seed Jelena Jankovic was ousted by No. 10 Sara Errani, 7-6, 6-2. Svetlana Kuznetsova (kooz-NET’-soh-vah) defeated Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-4 to join Halep, Errani and Andrea Petkovic in the quarterfinals.

Defending men’s doubles champions Bob and Mike Bryan of the U.S. have been eliminated. They lost in the quarterfinals to a pair of Spaniards seeded 12th. The Bryan twins, who were seeded No. 1, have now failed to reach the final at any of the last three Grand Slam tournaments, after winning four major titles in a row before that. The brothers own a record 15 major doubles championships, including at Roland Garros in 2003 and 2013.

Gambler denies any insider trading

LAS VEGAS (AP) β€” A Las Vegas gambler being investigated for possible insider trading involving golfer Phil Mickelson and investor Carl Icahn says it’s “preposterous to think” he would be involved in any such activity.

Billy Walters has issued a statement saying he has never made inside stock market trades, and that all of his dealings in the market are legitimate. A federal official briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press the FBI and Securities and Exchange Commission are analyzing trades Mickelson and Walters made involving Clorox at the same time Icahn was attempting to take over the company.

NFL-JETS

Jets ink draft pick

UNDATED (AP) β€” The New York Jets have signed safety and first-round pick Calvin Pryor to a four-year contract. He was the 18th overall selection out of Louisville.

Also in the NFL:

β€” The Cleveland Browns have signed unrestricted free agent cornerback Aaron Berry, who had previously played for Detroit and the New York Jets and suffered a season-ending knee injury on the first day of training camp last year. He was released by the Lions following arrests on DUI suspicion and assault charges.

β€” The New York Giants have waived suspended safety Will Hill, who was suspended by the NFL last week for six games in the upcoming season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He missed the opening four games of 2013 while under a similar suspension.

β€” Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin has undergone hip surgery, and the team has no timetable on his return. Irvin started all 12 games last season for the Super Bowl champion Seahawks after serving a four-game suspension at the start of the season.

β€” Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has signed a four-year contract with the New England Patriots, who selected him in the second round of this year’s NFL draft. Garoppolo threw for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns for Eastern Illinois last season and won the Walter Payton Award as the top player in FBS.
