Three Inmates Charged with Assaulting Rowan Jail Detention Officer

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Three men are charged with assaulting a detention officer inside the Rowan County jail, one of the three is Khari McClelland who is charged with the murder of Marco Kauffman. 

 
A spokesman for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office says McClelland and two other inmates were in a “day room” at the jail, when one of the inmates started beating on the door of the day room, saying he needed to go to the bathroom.
 
When a deputy opened the door, all three rushed out. Deputies say McClelland threw a punch at a deputy and a fight began between the three inmates and two deputies.
 
Other officers responded and brought the situation under control. The other two inmates charged are Darius Smotherson and Quentin Mathis.
 
According to a warrant,  Officer Jamie Travis was punched repeatedly in the head, causing a concussion, a broken nose and cuts to his face.
