CHARLOTTE, NC– In three weeks, Kilah Davenport would have turned 5 years old. But Thursday night her life ended suddenly after family members say she stopped breathing. She passed away at 6:08pm. It’s a sad story that has broken the hearts of many.

In 2012, Kilah’s step-father Joshua Houser badly abused Kilahsmashing her head into a wall, causing severe brain injuries. Last month, Houser was charged with felony child abuse.

Kilah’s case has led to a new state law named after her. “Kilah’s Law” requires convicted child abusers to spend 25 years to life in prison. A national version of the law sponsored by Congressman Robert Pittenger has passed through the U.S. House. It’s now making its way through the Senate. Pittenger says there is a new urgency to getting “Kilah’s Law” passed. “We’re here to protect them. We’re here to do what’s right,” says Pittenger, “I trust that Senator Reid and others will take that necessary step and really give action to this now.”

A Celebration of Life is planned for Kilah. It is taking place on Saturday, March. 22nd at 2:30 at the Oaks Events Center in Midland. It is open to the public.
