LILESVILLE, NC – Investigators spent Saturday checking out 30-acres of property belonging to the family of a former funeral director.
Wednesday, two bodies were found inside Mary McLeondon’s former Wadesboro funeral home, which had been closed for two years. Neighbors say the possibility of more bodies turning up creeps them out.
“It’s strange. It is strange,” says neighbor Jim Alexander. He watched as investigators searched his neighbor’s property.
Crews worked on foot, with cadaver dogs, and on a boat searching a small pond.
“As far as thinking anyone was buried out there, or any bodies were buried out there, that’s a complete shocker to me,” Alexander says.
The search site is about seven miles southeast of the funeral home.
“I know Mary. And she buried my husband’s mother. And she’s always been nice to us,” says neighbor Angela Burns.
Burns calls it a confusing situation. She doesn’t understand how the woman she trusted could be accused of doing this.
“Just feeling sorry for everybody involved,” she says.
After over six hours of searching and digging, investigators cleared the scene, finding nothing.
Alexander says he’s not surprised. “I’ve lived here about 10 years, and I’ve never seen anything out there that looked like it might have been dirt being dug up,” he says.
