CHARLOTTE, NC – Police need help identifying two suspects who committed an armed robbery on the Garinger High campus. Investigators say it happened around 1:00 Thursday afternoon.
Police say the victim was approached by the men, one who had a silver revolver in his waistband. That man stole a cell phone before the two suspects got away on foot.
“On a school day. This is awful, man. Things like this happen every day, but you know, it shouldn’t happen in a school zone,” says neighbor Maurice Cochrane.
Cochrane says while times are tough, there’s no excuse for robbing somebody at a school. “Let the stuff go, you know. If it’s like that, you gotta rob somebody, go get a job or something,” he says.
Garinger has seen it’s share of violence in recent years. In 2011, a 17-year-old was shot in the abdomen in the parking lot during a football game. A few months later, four students were arrested and one was injured after a fight.
Though the campus is surrounded by fencing and locked gates, some say more security should be considered.
“It’s getting ridiculous. And I think they need, when you come to school, I think they need to check you before you come in,” says East Charlotte resident Kerry Anderson.
“Basically, just more patrol. That’s all it is. Get more cops to be just sitting right there, you know. Just basically, worrying about the kids,” Cochrane says.
