Police Say A Man Died After Two Cars Got Into A Race In East Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says 21-year-old Daniel Knapp died after losing control of his 1999 Jeep Cherokee and hitting a tree while racing another car on October 1st around 10:40 p.m.

Medics say Knapp was pronounced dead at the scene and the other driver involved, 20-year-old Amy Linares in a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, was taken to Novant Mint Hill for precautionary reasons.

Detectives say Knapp and Linares were heading east on Parkton Road with Knapp traveling in the westbound lane and Linares traveling in the eastbound lane.

The two cars got into a race initiated by Linares, and they went over 80 miles per hour in a 25 mile-per-hour zone when Knapp lost control of his Jeep, and hit a tree off the left side of the road.

Linares was released from the hospital and taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning where she was charged with involuntary manslaughter, willful speed competition, no operator’s license, no liability insurance, and a fake registration.

Deputies say speeding is a factor in the crash, but impairment is not pending blood test results.

The investigation is active, and anyone with more information is asked to call Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
