A travel day in the Fall Classic

UNDATED (AP) β€” The World Series resumes play tomorrow night in San Francisco after last night’s 7-2 win by the Royals. That victory evened up the best-of-seven series after the Giants won the opening game Tuesday night. Last night’s game was tied at 2-2 before the Royals exploded for five runs in the sixth inning.

The pitching matchup for Game 3 has Tim Hudson scheduled to start for the Giants against Jeremy Guthrie.

If neither team sweeps the three games in San Francisco, the series will shift back to Kansas City for Game 6 next Tuesday.

NFL-SCHEDULE

Chargers invade Denver

DENVER (AP) β€” The teams vying for the lead in the NFL’s AFC West are meeting tonight in Denver. The Broncos start the game with a record of 5-1 while the visiting Chargers are 5-2. Denver is of course led by record-breaking quarterback Peyton Manning while Philip Rivers is still in charge of the team from San Diego. Manning is the AFC’s top quarterback with a 113.0 passer rating while Rivers is second. Manning has a 19-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio while Rivers’ is 17-3.

The Broncos were held under 65 snaps just twice last season, both times by San Diego. On a Thursday night last year the Chargers shocked the Broncos 27-20 in Denver.

The game features the top tight ends in the NFL, Julius Thomas of the Broncos, who has nine TD catches, and Antonio Gates, who has seven.

NFL-LONDON

Falcons coach predicts team in England

WATFORD, England (AP) β€” The Atlanta Falcons are playing the Detroit Lions in London this Sunday and Falcons coach Mike Smith says he thinks the league will eventually have a franchise in London. Despite some of the logistical problems, time zone and travel issues, Smith says the league is working on making it happen and says, “it’s probably going to happen sooner than later.” He says “the NFL is in an expansion mode.”

No. 18 takes to the field tonight

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) β€” There’s a top-25 football game tonight in Greenville, North Carolina, as No. 18 East Carolina takes on Connecticut in an American Athletic Conference game. The Pirates enter the game with a record of 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while the visiting Huskies are 1-5 and 0-3.

The 5-1 start is the best in 15 years for East Carolina and the national ranking is its first since 2008.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Busy night of on ice action

UNDATED (AP) β€” Two four-win teams are facing off tonight in Boston as the Bruins entertain the Islanders. New York is 4-2 on the season while Boston is 4-4. This is the first of three games between the clubs this season. Last year the New Yorkers won two of three.

Two more four-win teams are meeting this evening in Nashville as the Predators take on the Blackhawks. This is their second meeting of the season with Chicago winning on Oct. 18 2-1 in overtime. The Preds a year ago won three of five from the ‘Hawks.

The first of three this season between the Penguins and Red Wings is being played tonight in Detroit. Following this game they won’t meet again until Feb. 11. The Pens took two of the games last season.

A year ago the Canucks swept all three games from the Blues. Tonight in St. Louis they play the first of three games this season.

Arizona is looking to snap a two-game losing streak tonight with a game at Minnesota. This is the first of their three meetings this season.

Carolina is winless this season. The Hurricanes enter tonight’s game at Calgary with a mark of 0-3-2 while the Flames are 4-3-1.

In Los Angeles the Stanley Cup champion Kings are playing host to the Sabres and in San Jose the Sharks are entertaining the Blue Jackets.

PGA

First-round play today in Georgia

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Georgia (AP) β€” The opening round of this week’s PGA event is underway. It’s the McGladrey Classic in Georgia and in the early going of the first round Brendon Todd and Ken Duke share first at 3-under.

The field includes two members of the losing U.S. Ryder Cup team, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur).

LPGA-CHINA

Korda sets the opening round pace

HAINAN ISLAND, China (AP) β€” Americans had good rounds on the first day of the LPGA event in China. The lead is held by Jessica Korda at 6-under after an opening-round 66. One shot back are several players including fellow Americans Michelle Wie (wee) and Brittany Lang.

Korda, who birdied five of the first eight holes, is a two-time winner on the tour this season.
