Week At A Glance: CMS Kindergarten Through 5th Grade Students Return To In-Person Learning

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It has been a week since multiple Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools opened their doors again for in-person learning to thousands of Kindergarten through 5th grade students.

COVID-19 cases across Mecklenburg County, as well as the state, have experienced a spike in new cases within the past couple of weeks. With the state experiencing a record high of 2,908 newly reported positive cases within 24 hours reported cases on Friday.

CMS has now started to report their own metrics on the schools website which breaks down any coronavirus cases within employees and staff aside from the county-wide data. The school’s metrics are presented in a weekly report.

At a glance, as of Friday, Nov. 6, there are a total of 41,688 students that are receiving in-person and of those students 11 reported tested positive since October 31. During the same time period, 29 staff members out of 19,106 tested positive for COVID-19.

In addition, CMS has broken down the impact coronavirus has had at a district and school level when it comes to case monitoring and clusters.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools stated that their data may differ from the Mecklenburg County Public Health report due to a number of factors, such as teachers, students and staff residing outside of Mecklenburg County.

On the same day as this report, Mecklenburg County reported that there were 35,628 cases of novel coronavirus with 404 deaths due to COVID-19 reported among residents since the start of the pandemic. This was a reported increase of 296 new positive cases across the county within two days, according to health officials.
