Rescue crews evacuate people from Corvian Community School in NE Charlotte
ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — Officials say five people are dead, including a one-year-old child, after flood waters overtook the Hiddenite Family Campground in Alexander County. A sixth person was killed in Alexander County when their vehicle crashed after flood waters swept away a bridge.
The five victims who died at the Hiddenite Family Campground have been identified as:
- Crystal Dawn LeVan Reed, age 49 of Hiddenite, NC
- Tyrell Jordan “Ty” Reed, age 18 of Hiddenite, NC
- Tina Ann Allen, age 52 of Hiddenite, NC
- Ronald James Wintemute, age 76 of Hiddenite, NC
- Mason Lee Flowers, age 1 of Hiddenite, NC

Rescue crews were able to rescue 31 of the campers at the campground off Princess Lane. Officials say they recovered the body of the one-year-old child Friday afternoon. Alexander County experienced major flooding after approximately 7-10 inches of rain fell in the area overnight.
A storm shelter has been set up at East Taylorsville Baptist Church for the campers impacted at the Hiddenite Family Campground. Officials say 13 people are currently at the shelter.
Officials say they had another report of a fatality following a wreck in the northern part of the county on Hopewell Church Road in the Vashti community due to a bridge outage and high water. The name of that person hasn’t been released at this time.
At least fifty roads were damaged and four bridges were swept away in Alexander County. Officials want to remind people to NOT drive around barriers and to TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN. If you see standing water on the roadway, turn around instead of trying to drive through the standing water.
Officials believe it will take months to get the roads repaired. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
