A 3,541 pound great white shark named Nukumi – AKA “Queen of the Ocean” pinged off the North Carolina coast Thursday morning. Nukumi is an adult female who has grown to 17 feet 2 inches.
Nukumi was tagged by OCEARCH on October 2nd, 2020 off the south coast of Nova Scotia. The past month and a half she has traveled down the east coast, arriving off Hatteras Island early this week and has been hanging around since.
According to OCEARCH – “Sharks are the balance keepers of our oceans so if we lose our sharks, we lose our oceans. By gathering data on the sites most critical to the survival of white sharks, responsible ocean management policies can be enacted to protect them.”
Great white sharks off the Carolina coast is not unusual, especially this time of year as they make their annual southern migration to escape the cold waters up north.
