Hundreds Attend Vigil for Boy Who Died at Football Practice

CHARLOTTE, NC — Hundreds of family, friends and teammates are remembering a little boy who died during football practice.

They held a candlelight vigil in Marshall Park for O’Maury Chambers.  The 10-year-old was running at practice last week when he collapsed.  The coroner says he had a heart defect.

Chambers never even got to play a game with his youth league team: the West Charlotte Hornets.

“When I met the kid, I was trying to save his life,” said coach T.J. Mungo.  “Thank you, O’Maury.  You changed my life, and you will always forever be a West Charlotte Hornet.”

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and linebacker Luke Kuechly signed a jersey that Chambers will reportedly be buried with.
