CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect accused of shooting at an officer earlier this week was shot and killed by police at a northeast Charlotte motel. Β
Investigators say someone called 911 saying they had seen Devaron Wilburn. Β He was wanted for firing at an officer late Monday night on West Trade Street. Β
Police swarmed the Intown Suites on North Tryon Street near University City Boulevard and immediately began moving nearby residents to a safe location. Β
Officers called the room and spoke to a woman who was in the room with the suspect. Β She voluntarily left the room. Β
Officers then attempted to convince Wilburn to surrender but he allegedly refused. Β Wilburn is then accused of pointing a weapon at officers. Β
Officer David Michaud shot the suspect once in the abdomen. Β He was rushed to the hospital but died a short time later. Β
Police located the firearm that was allegedly pointed at officers. Β As standard procedure, the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether or not CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident. Β
Officer Michaud has been place on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Β He was been a member of the police department since September 1994. Β
