Cowboys stunned in Dallas

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) β€” The Dallas Cowboys have suffered their first loss since the season opener.

Kai Forbath hit a 40-yard field goal with 5:17 gone in overtime before Washington stopped the Cowboys on downs to complete a 20-17 victory at Dallas. Colt McCoy had another impressive showing since becoming the Redskins’ quarterback, completing 25 of 30 for 299 yards. He’s now 36 of 42 for 427 yards in six quarters since taking over for Kirk Cousins.

McCoy also ran for a seven-yard touchdown to cap an 80-yard drive that put Washington ahead 17-10 in the fourth quarter. But the Cowboys forced overtime with their own 80-yard drive as Branden Weeden hit Jason Witten for a 25-yard score with 9:27 left in regulation.

Weeden was 4 of 6 while filling in for Tony Romo, who was injured during a third-quarter sack and didn’t return until the final drive of regulation.

Romo was 17 of 28 for 209 yards and a touchdown.

Dallas scored just 17 points despite DeMarco Murray, who rolled up 221 total yards. Murray had 141 yards on 19 carries and also caught four passes for 80 yards.

Washington is 3-5 following its second straight win. The Cowboys are 6-2.

New York loses Beason…Ryan tabs Vick over Smith

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) β€” New York Giants middle linebacker Jon Beason will miss the rest of the season because of a foot injury that will require surgery.

Beason tore a ligament and fractured a bone during a team workout on June 12. He spent training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list before being added to the active roster prior to the season-opener.

In other NFL news:

β€” New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has announced that quarterback Michael Vick will start over Geno Smith in Sunday’s game against the Chiefs in Kansas City. Smith threw interceptions on the Jets’ first three possessions on Sunday before Vick fumbled twice and was picked off once in a 43-23 loss to Buffalo. The Jets have lost seven straight since a season-opening victory against the winless Oakland Raiders.

β€” St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Jake Long and wide receiver Brian Quick both will miss the rest of the season because of injuries suffered in Sunday’s loss to Kansas City. Long tore the ACL in his knee during the third quarter, and Quick “suffered significant damage” to his shoulder in the second period.

β€” The Jacksonville Jaguars are down another defender. Defensive back Will Blackmon, who plays the slot in nickel and dime situations, is out indefinitely because of a broken index finger on his left hand.

β€” And Lamarr Houston’s sack celebration will cost the Chicago Bears defensive end the remainder of the season. Houston ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while celebrating a late sack with the Bears, trailing by 25 late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Patriots. General manager Phil Emery says Houston will have surgery once the swelling goes down.

WORLD SERIES

Series shifts to KC

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Royals and Giants spent the final scheduled off-day of the major league season flying from San Francisco to Kansas City, where they worked out Monday in preparation for Game 6 tonight.

The Giants are one victory away from their third World Series title in five years following another gem thrown by Madison Bumgarner. He tossed the first complete-game shutout in a World Series game since 2003, scattering four hits in a 5-0 win over the Royals. Bumgarner is 4-0 with a 0.29 ERA lifetime in World Series play.

Bumgarner isn’t the only Giant enjoying a memorable series. Hunter Pence leads all players with a .474 average, going 9-for-19 with one homer, five RBIs and six runs scored. He’s had a hand in 10 of the Giants’ 27 runs scored in the series. Pablo Sandoval is hitting .364 with four RBIs in 22 at-bats, and Brandon Crawford is batting .333 after going 2-for-4 with three RBIs in Sunday’s victory.

Salvador Perez and Alcides (al-SEE’-dehs) Escobar are the only Royals to hit over .263 and play all five games. Perez has a .353 average with one homer and four RBIs, while Escobar is hitting .286.

The Royals will start 23-year old rookie Yordano Ventura against Jake Peavy (PEE’-vee) in a rematch of Game 2 starters. The Royals won that game 7-2.

Still looking to get out

Simpson argues that his trial lawyer botched the case and had conflicted interests.
